Canadians will be able to legally buy and grow cannabis for recreational use by October 17th, 2018. Is your Board ready for the impact?

The legalization of cannabis will open up a whole new market to Canadians and with it, the need to understand how this will affect our workforce. Employers and their Boards will need to understand the implications and ensure workplace strategies and policies are a priority.

This event will explore cannabis in the workforce from a legal, scientific, medical, and occupational health and safety perspective.


Janice Detta Colli, C.Dir., Founder of Board Flight Paths

Janice Detta Colli has been a well-regarded leader and expert in the executive search industry for over 20 years. She began her career in the research side of the business and then moved into top management roles at some of the world’s best known firms, culminating in her role creating and leading the Toronto office for the oldest global search firm in the world.

In the fall of 2014, Janice created her own business leveraging both her long executive search career and her early career as a Sociology Instructor at the University of Western Ontario. She established Board Flight Paths out of her passion for working with Boards of Directors. Janice is focused on working more closely with senior executives who want to sit on Boards of Directors or who want to find a new, more challenging Directorship role. She also helps Boards effectively assess the talents they possess and recruit the skilled directors they need to grow their business.

Due to her deep relationships with senior executives, Janice has also established a small, elite, highly confidential team of experts across a variety of disciplines who will assist Boards with their most sensitive issues. Janice works one on one and facilitates groups to support executives while they build and hone the pragmatic skills required to build their careers on Boards across Canada and Internationally.

Currently, as a Chartered Director (C.Dir.) Janice sits on the Board of the national foundation, Women in Leadership, is on the Advisory Board for a Strategic Consulting start-up, is on faculty with The Directors College and is building upon her own not for profit Directorship experience as she expands her own Board career.


Dr. Mitchell Levine, MD, MSc, FRCPC, FACP, FISPE

Mitchell Levine received his medical degree from the University of Calgary, which was followed by postgraduate medical training in Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Toronto. He then received an MSc degree in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University.

Dr. Levine is a Professor at McMaster University in two departments, the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact, and the Department of Medicine. He is also an Assistant Dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Clinically, he practices medicine as a consultant physician in Hamilton in the fields of  Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology.

Mitchell currently holds the appointment as Chair and CEO for the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board. He is also a therapeutics consultant for the Ontario Ministry of Health.

He is the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Population Therapeutics and is an Associate Editor for the ACP Journal Club and Evidence-Based Medicine.

His academic interests include assessing medication use in the community and developing methods for promoting the safe and cost-effective use of drug therapy.

Tracy Kay, Partner, Employment and Labour Law Group, Minden Gross LLP

Tracy is a Partner in the Employment and Labour Law Group. Her practice focuses on assisting employers with such issues as hiring, discipline, promotions, termination, human rights, employee loyalty, workplace investigations regarding harassment and bullying, unions, and workplace safety. She represents clients at mediations, hearings, and trials.

Tracy takes a proactive approach to the law and works to find solutions to her clients' concerns. Her hands-on approach enables clients to navigate employment issues without losing sight of their business. Tracy becomes involved in her client’s business by looking at the long term plan, understanding the culture of the organization, and how that impacts the client’s employee issues. With this approach, Tracy understands the background of her client’s requests and can assist with creative solutions that the client may have not considered. She also regularly conducts in-house training seminars on proactive employment issues so her clients are aware of and stay ahead of statutory requirements.

In Tracy’s area of practice, facts do not always unfold as originally told. She has the ability to react to new information quickly and develop the right next step for the desired outcome. Tracy’s down-to-earth and compassionate nature make her a trusted advisor to her clients.

Jan Chappel, Senior Technical Specialist- Occupational Health and Safety, Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety

Jan Chappel is a Senior Technical Specialist at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) where she provides expertise in mental health, workplace safety, occupational hygiene and education to CCOHS’ team of specialists.
Jan is the project lead for the Center’s online fact sheets (OSH Answers) and publications. She works on a variety of projects including creating web tools and mobile apps for organizations such as WorkSafe New Brunswick and WorkSafe Saskatchewan and authoring e-learning courses. She also developed occupational health and safety educational material for teachers in Ontario and Costa Rica.

Most recently, Jan co-authored CCOHS’ White Paper, Workplace Strategies: Risk of Impairment from Cannabis, and has given many presentations on this subject.

She is an active member of several Canadian Standards Association technical committees, including Occupational Health and Safety Training, Incident Investigation, and others.

Jan received a Masters of Health Science degree in Occupational Hygiene from the University of Toronto and a Honours Bachelor degree in Health Studies from the University of Waterloo.
