PRIVATE TOUR OF THE CITADELLE AND THE RESIDENCE OF THE GOVERNOR GENERAL
The Citadelle is the largest British fortress built in North America. It constitutes the eastern flank of Quebec's fortifications. In 1820 the construction of the Citadelle began and lasted for more than 30 years. The star-shaped plan of the Citadelle is characteristic of Vauban’s fortifications.
Some of the walls enclose over 300 years of military history in Quebec City, spanning the French, British and Canadian periods. Due to its defensive and geographical situation on top of the Cape Diamond, it was often referred to as the “American Gibraltar”.
The continuous presence of the Royal 22e Régiment at the Citadelle since 1920 makes it the largest fortified group of buildings still occupied by troops in North America. Today it is home to an active military garrison and the second official residence of the Governor General of Canada which stands within the Citadelle.
The interpretation will be provided by the guides of the Citadel on site.
Duration: 3 hours
