Sheldon Stener, K.C. is General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL).  In this role, Sheldon oversees the Legal and Governance Department.

As General Counsel, Sheldon provides legal and strategic advice to the CEO and the Board of Directors and oversees a team of lawyers. Sheldon is also FCL’s Chief Privacy Officer.

As Corporate Secretary, a role he has held since 2013, Sheldon is responsible for overseeing and providing guidance and direction with respect to the governance of FCL and its subsidiaries. He also oversees the provision of governance advice to the 160 retail members co-ops of FCL situated across Western Canada.

Sheldon joined FCL in 2007.  Prior to that, he spent 17 years in private legal practice in Regina, Saskatchewan.  Sheldon has served on several boards, including SaskFilm and a decade as an executive team member of the board of the University of Regina Rams Football Club which included two years as President.  He is currently the Board Chair of Co‑operatives First, a nonprofit corporation.

Sheldon is a member of the Governance Professionals of Canada and holds a GPC.D designation. He spent four years on the Board of GPC and prior to that, served for three years as a judge for the GPC Excellence in Governance Awards. Sheldon is a former member of the National Executive of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association in addition to having chaired a number of local sections of the CBA in Saskatchewan.

Sheldon graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies in 1987 and obtained a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1990. He received his King’s Counsel designation in 2019.
