Deliberately Designing Board Culture

Famously, "culture eats strategy for breakfast" (Peter Drucker). 

In a governance context, the culture of a board - not its policies and procedures - can be the strongest determinant of its contribution to organizational value

In this session, we will explore what we mean when we talk about board culture, how to shape the governance culture that your organization needs, and the tools that the governance professional has to assist the board in this endeavour.

  1. An elevated understanding of what board culture is, and how it impacts board behaviour and organizational outcomes.

  2. An appreciation of the inclusion imperative, how to thoughtfully and proactively create an inclusive board culture, and the role of the governance professional.

Speaker:

Shona McGlashan FCG is the principal at McGlashan Consulting, specializing in values- based governance, EDI in leadership, and workplace mental health. She is a senior leader with over 25 years’ experience heading governance, public affairs, diversity and inclusion, and workplace mental health functions on both sides of the Atlantic. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute, a governance thought leader, and a sought-after speaker and facilitator. Shona is particularly focused on helping boards add strategic value to their organizations through the thoughtful and proactive development of an inclusive decision- making culture.

Shona began her career advising the Speaker, MPs, and parliamentary committees in the UK’s House of Commons. Her most recent executive roles were VP Governance & Corporate Secretary at Vancity Credit Union, where she also led the organization’s mental health strategy, and Chief Governance Officer at Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Shona is the board vice-chair at Pain BC and Governance Committee chair at Bard on the Beach. She is a parent of teenagers, voracious reader, Gaelic learner, and student of mindfulness.
