Beyond Minutes: Dynamic Writing for Governance Professionals

Ask yourself: why does your coworker book a meeting when she could have written a short memo? Why do your consultants flood their presentations with fancy graphics? Because writing is hard and dynamic writing is harder still.

In this session, join documentation expert, Adrienne Bellehumeur as she dives into the world of “dynamic writing” which is a hybrid writing style that borrows the best from a range of writing disciplines, including technical writing, copywriting, blogging, and journalism.

This session shares practical writing techniques that you can implement immediately to your work as a governance professional. It shares aspirational concepts so you can embrace dynamic writing for today’s age of “influencer leadership” to grow as a leader in your role, career, and professional and industry circles.

Contrary to popular misconception, there is no app you can download to get your dynamic writing style. Developing your own writing style takes practice, persistence, pounding the keys, and learning the tricks and techniques that you will gain from this session.

You know your audience and understand what they need to know and what they don’t know. Dynamic writing will help you to influence others and to stand out as a person among “parrots” and corporate androids.

Key learnings from this course include how to:

  • Getting information out of your head – Learn tips for getting more information out of your and your team’s head to give ideas and thoughts momentum.
  • Avoiding legalese and “Yoda-ese”— Unlearn how you learned to write in law school, the corporate world, or (God forbid) your MBA.
  • Stealing the sizzle from Copywriters – Unlock the writing secrets of marketers through WIIFM (what’s in it for me?) and grab your reader by the ego.
  • Turbocharging your language with smart writing tips – Learn techniques including curing “noun-itis”, using verbs effectively, cutting the passive voice, and getting to know your online thesaurus.
  • Embracing the art of tone – Learn how to write policies, procedures, and communications that influence people and treat them like adults (without yelling at them).
  • Specific examples for governance professionals – Apply the learnings from this session to specific practices used by governance professionals including policies, minutes, corporate communications, and email.
